Apollo Airways Worldwide System is an American airline in the retrofuturistic video game series Bioshock and the first-person exploration game Gone Home.

Description[]

The airline was seen to be operating since the late 1930s, as on August 26th, 1939, Charles Milton Porter traveled with his wife Pearl Porter via Apollo Airways to London in order to work with Alan Turing. Their flight departed from Philadelphia at 7:15 AM, and arrived in London at 3:29 PM. There were no noted disturbances on the flight.

In 1960, Apollo Airways suffered a tragedy, the loss of flight DF-0301 over the Atlantic Ocean. The plane, en route from San Francisco to London, carrying eighty-nine passengers and six crew, was hijacked at (63° 2' N, 29° 55' W). The sole survivor of the planes' crash into the North Atlantic was Jack Wynand.

Apollo Airways then returns in the video game Gone Home. A baggage tag for Apollo Air can be seen on Kaitlin Greenbriar's luggage. The game takes place in 1995, implying continued service from Europe to the United States. The developers of the Fullbright Company, Steve Gaynor, Karla Zimonja, and Johnnemann Nordhagen, worked together on Minerva's Den. In an interview, Gaynor linked the two games together:

“The airline that Katie takes to go to Europe, we never named the airline, but their logo is an ‘80s brand update to the airline that Jack’s plane crashes into Rapture. So in a completely unenforceable way, theoretically, we have caused all of these universes to coexist.”

As the quote states, the airline has gone through a brand update sometime in the 1980s.

Fleet[]

The airline is known to only operate one aircraft type, the Boeing 707, since the tail of the plane in the game has the infamous antenna mounted on top of the vertical stabilizer.

Basis[]

Apollo Airways is based on Pan American World Airways, as the logo is based on Pan Am's logos used from 1928-1955, and the fact Pan Am also operated Boeing 707s, but wearing their 1957-1971 logo.

Accidents and Incidents[]

  • In 1960, an Apollo Airways Boeing 707 flying from San Francisco to London, England crashes into the Atlantic Ocean and breaks up upon impact. Out of the 89 passengers and 6 crew members that were on board, only one passenger survived.
